2018 offered fans of a variety of genres and artists greatness, as it brought to the table a multitude of successful albums, EP’s, singles, and soundtracks, as well as the introduction to new artists and captivating returns of more experienced members of the art.

The Hip-Hop/Rap and R&B genres conquered this year’s top charts, but other genres like Pop, Alternative, and Rock contributed to the many successes of 2018’s year in music.

Billboard presented the most listened to album to Taylor Swift’s “reputation”, which featured some of the biggest singles of 2017 and 2018 like “Look What You Made Me Do”, “…Ready For It?”, and “End Game feat. Ed Sheeran & Future”. Drake’s “Scorpion” fell shortly behind to the No. 2 spot and featured many of the biggest singles to enter the realm of Hip-Hop/Rap such as “Nice For What”, “God’s Plan”, “I’m Upset”, “Nonstop”, and especially, “Don’t Matter to Me”, which presented the return of the “king of pop”: Michael Jackson.

Post Malone’s “beerbongs & bentleys” and “Stoney”, which was released back in 2016, made the “Top Billboard 200 Albums – Year 2018” list and took the No. 3 and No. 8 spots. Post’s career launch came from the release of his first two chart-toppers “White Iverson” and “Congratulations”, both featured on “Stoney”, but “beerbongs & bentleys” also presents fans of the rapper with many other songs like “Better Now”, “rockstar”, “Psycho feat. Ty Dolla $ign”, “Stay”, and “Spoil My Night feat. Swae Lee”.

20th Century Fox’s debut of “The Greatest Showman” in late 2017 came along with a soundtrack popular enough to come in at No. 4 and make a name for the musical genre. Actors Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, and Zendaya illuminate the soundtrack with many of the film’s most memorable songs like “A Million Dreams”, “Rewrite the Stars”, and “The Greatest Show”. Falling slightly behind at No. 5 is Ed Sheeran’s “÷”. Sheeran provided countless radio stations with two of his biggest successes of the album “Shape of You” and “Perfect” in 2017, but remained a chart-topper throughout the following year.

The introduction to Cardi B came with the release of her initial and most popular track “Bodak Yellow”, but 2017 also gave fans of the rapper another hit in the form of “Bartier Cardi feat. 21 Savage”. Both singles make an appearance on Cardi’s debut album, placed at No. 6, “Invasion of Privacy”, along with tracks like “Ring feat. Kehlani”, “I Like It feat. Bad Bunny & J. Balvin”, and “Be Careful”.

Travis Scott’s “ASTROWORLD”, only recently released in August of 2018, collects the No. 7 spot and delivers as one of 2018’s most well-developed album. Scott provides his fans with his original sound but also elaborates upon new-found trends of the year through more elemental beat drops and a multitude of verses within the same song. “SICKO MODE”, “YOSEMITE feat. Gunna & NAV”, “BUTTERFLY EFFECT”, “STARGAZING”, and “NC-17” stand out as some of Scott’s strongest songs featured on the album and show how successful Travis Scott has become, based on the album’s ranking when only being released six months prior to the release of Billboard’s list of the top albums of 2018.

Without a doubt, XXXTENTACION, better known as just “X”, became one of Hip-Hop’s most popular rapper but passed away on June 18, 2018 at the young age of 20 years old. X’s death somewhat launched his album “?” and led to it taking the No. 9 spot with featured tracks like “Moonlight” and “SAD!”. Taking the No. 10 spot on Billboard’s “Top Billboard 200 Albums – Year 2018” is Migo’s “Culture II”. Following the success of the group’s previous album, “Culture”, Quavo, Offset, and Takeoff became even more of a success through the releases of songs like “Stir Fry”, “Walk It Talk It”, “Narcos”, and “Motorsport”.

While Billboard answers the question of which albums were played the most, other opinions in relation to the best albums and artists of 2018 vary.
